Mark de Clive-Lowe: Melodius Beats Volume 1

By Stephen Jewell
His1999 debut album 'Six Degrees' still ranks as one of the best New Zealand albums based around a house template, although his 2000 follow-up, the over-ambitious 'Nuvonesia' LP was wide of the mark. Released through his new record label Antipodean Records, 'Melodius Beats Volume 1' is a compilation of various tracks and remixes that de Clive-Lowe has made over the past few years. Some songs, like the sumptuous Cherie Matheson-sung cover of Curtis Mayfield's classic Move On Up, will be familiar to anyone who has seen him play out recently (on his occasional return trips from Europe). In fact, over half the album's tracks are de Clive-Lowe originals including The Way That It Goes and El Dia Perfecto, which appears in remix form by Restless Soul, aka Nathan Haines' production partner Phil Asher. But 'Melodius Beats' most outstanding tracks are perhaps de Clive-Lowe's remixes including that of Danilo Perez's Pan Africa and the similarly-themed Africa by Meitz, as remixed by Restless Soul with additional keyboards from our man in London. Big ups also to Spence and Otistik for the excellent artwork and packaging.
