Carly Binding: Passenger
By Claire Nelson
Flawless yet 'not overcrowded' production, accompanied by tight melodies should make this debut from sweet-as-pie Carly a first time hit. Described by herself as an album of "big pop songs" which are "simple but really bombard you with melody", 'Passenger' delivers just that. Her confident vocal and songwriting style is very much like Sheryl Crow or Amanda Marshall, and the Stellar* musicians' participation in both production and musicianship ties nicely. Honest love-induced lyrics accompany catchy melodies and while the radio singles are bright and chirpy, most of 'Passenger' is deeper and more emotional. Carly's musical career may have not have begun on the greatest of stepping stones but she has certainly proven her ability as a skilled songwriter with a likeable voice. Not that she has anything to prove... still, she has made it clear that she is in the driver's seat on this one. Expect a record of honest and simple songwriting with a truck load of melody. Out now on FMR.
