Human Instinct: Peg Leg
By Peter Dent
This was the sixth album by underground rock band Human Instinct. It was recorded in 1975, but was never released due to the subsequent arrival of several new members, and a change in direction. The tapes were seemingly lost, but were unearthed in 2001 by Eldred Stebbing, who was present at the sessions 27 years ago! The tapes were digitally restored and the resulting CD is as fresh and exciting as anything on the rock scene today. The many incarnations of Human Instinct were all led by main vocalist and stand-up drummer, Maurice Greer. Incredibly talented himself, Greer also had a crack team of players with him on 'Peg Leg'. All members played, wrote and sang on the album, and the result is staggering. Seventies influences such as Pink Floyd, Yes and Bowie are obvious, but I could also hear King Crimson, Vanilla Fudge and 'Lucky Man'-era Emerson, Lake and Palmer in there. You get the picture: a big, theatrical, grandiose rock album, full of twists and turns. Remarkable!
