Conray: Mefasolate
By Jessie Scoullar
Long-time producer Dale Cotton has at last released a record of his own creation, through new independent Auckland label Turbine which is he also co-runs. Cotton has an enormous range of credits, including production for many top local acts including HDU and Dimmer, live engineering at countless gigs and twice being winner of the b.Net Producer of the Year award. 'Mefasolate' is a beautifully textured outing into new realms of electronica, utilising a huge range of samples. The interestingly varied album includes thousands of fragments of NZ-pressed vinyl from the '60s and '70s, stretched, cut up, re-arranged and re-pitched. There are occasional oriental touches - Chinese instrumentation and vocals providing a theme of sorts. In an album of such consistent excellence favourites are hard to pick, however the eerie hip-hop flavoured I Lost You and the upbeat Children of God deserve special mention.
