Nathan Haines: Squire For Hire
By Nick Batt
Following the success of his earlier CD 'Sound Travels', Nathan Haines' latest release seems a natural progression in his exploration of jazz meets... well ... just about everything. (Jazz-dance-Latin-soul-rap with a dash of '70s flavouring.) But then what did you expect from a man who cites some of his influences as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Pharoah Sanders, Weather Report and Joni Mitchell. Haines teamed up again with Phil Asher to write and produce the 12 mainly original tracks. A variety of other artists (Marlena Shaw, Damon Albarn, Shelley Nelson, Mark de Clive Lowe etc.) help to keep the whole thing interesting and add diversity. Haines gives them plenty of room to move, showing self-control and saving the album from becoming a jazz noodlefest. That's not to say that there isn't plenty of his sax to keep the reed-heads happy, it's just that the emphasis is on groove, which this album has - big time!
