Various: Good Shit Happens (CD, DVD & Book)
By Emma Philpott
Another project from Loop Recordings Aot(ear)oa, this time a complete creative package - CD, DVD and art book, and the fifth in their 'Select' series of multimedia compilations. To the music side of things - there are 18 tracks here and they are a seamless collection of likeminded artists - mostly drawn from NZ, though the odd outsider, including New York performer Carl Hancock Rux, gets on board as well. Loop artists are well represented, with tracks from the albums of Confucious, Age Pryor and The Upbeats, but putting out the call for talent to fill it have brought out some interesting little projects. Highlights include Farmer Pimp's almost Portishead-like Good Thing, Flash Harry's Something Back, and the echo heavy DJ Vee remix of Little Atoms by The Black Seeds. It's also Loop's first foray into the DVD realm, and the viewer gets the chance to see eight music videos that you might have missed on the tele, including Trinity Roots' beautiful Little Things, as well as eight superb local short films from some of our acclaimed directors. And then you've got a neat little 136 page book which draws on our artistic community... With all that for your money, this might be the cultural injection you're after. Check it out.
