Darcy Perry Band: Don't Hold Back
By Rachel Fallon
These boys don't mess around! This album was recorded in a mere three days which some might say was a tad rushed, but those blues lovers out there I'm sure will agree that this style of music is best represented with the energy and freshness of live recording, so that's what they've done. Soon after its release the album won an Iwi Radio Network award for Best NZ Blues Release reaffirming this decision. All tracks bar one are written and produced by Darcy himself, making quite a contrast to his debut album 'Blues 4 Dad' released in 2002 which was mainly a tribute to his favourite blues greats. The standard of musicianship is high utilising a string of guest artists along with his talented regular four piece band. Despite the fact that Darcy himself may benefit from some vocal tuition, he sings with great passion and soul, expressing his love for the Chicago blues style well. The band are working hard playing regularly around the country including the summer Jazz and Blues festivals, so I'm sure we will all get the opportunity to enjoy the full Darcy Perry experience real soon.
