Pounamu: I Te Timatanga
By Tony Parker
A collection of original songs from the Pounamu Maori Performing Arts Group, a group driven by Ngapo and Pimia Wehi in their quest to convey positive maori messages to the youth of a new generation. Sung completely in te reo the songs are placed in modern musical settings with assistance from Legend Music's Adrian Stuckey and Alistair Riddell. Dance beats mix with traditional maori instruments and percussion in an updated version of the Patea Maori Club sound. In places steel guitar and island rhythms give things a broader South Pacific feel, while some of the R'n B grooves would not sound out of place on mainstream radio. Ultimately the focus is on the vocals and the songwriting which although traditional in their construction are executed in a contemporary manner. It's a nice balance between old and new and another good example of how present day Maori music is evolving.
