Ralph Bennett: Yes Yes Yes

By Nick Batt
While I might not share Ralph Bennett's absolute enthusiasm he sure would be a useful guy to have round a campfire. This, his third album, follows a predominantly blues/folk theme. Assisted by his family (Sam - drums, Jake - electric guitar and Heather on vocals), Bennett and his acoustic guitar romp through a selection of mostly original material. He sings about travelling over Arthur's Pass, wanting a cup of coffee and life on the road. This is down to earth NZ folk blues and although the singing and playing is variable at times you certainly don't doubt his sincerity and commitment to performing. In all honesty I suspect that this recording doesn't really do him justice. The Bennett family travel the country extensively as part of the Gypsy Fair so there is a good chance that he could be appearing near you in the future - why not check him out?
