Dan Kendrick: Left Hand Dive

By Peter Dent
I first heard of Dan Kendrick on the debut CD 'By Road' (which I reviewed in 1999 or so). He's still as busy as ever, working as a performer, songwriter and actor! On this, his first solo release, Dan performs the bulk of the instruments (vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass, percussion, sax) and wrote or co-wrote all 14 tunes. Speaking of tunes, they range in style from folk to pop to funk - all with ease! In fact I started listening to the first track (How's It Hanging) straight after the new Dave Weck Band CD, and it was so funky, I had to check what it was! The lyrics are quirky and entertaining - you've got to hand it to someone who can use the term, "you lucky bastard", in a song! Kendrick's voice is as quirky and entertaining as the songs themselves - quite posh-sounding, with lots of cheeky, Kiwi attitude. I don't mean to make this sound like a one-horse race: Rhys Clarke played drums; David Bowater played saxophones; Clive Garlick played mandolin and additional guitars; Liz Kendrick sang, and Rich Kendrick played bass and sang. A fine album with plenty of variety. Recommended and available through Real Groovy, Marbecks and www.smokecds.com.
