Various: Grey Lynn Park Festival Compilation

By Jessie Scoullar
If, like me, you're not from Auckland, you've probably never heard of the Grey Lynn Park Festival. That's why event organiser Naomi Larsen has put together this excellent value double CD - to bring the 19-year old community event to the nation. The first disc covers acts performing at the last festival, and the tracks flow well covering a broad spectrum of genres. There's good representation of soul/funk/dub artists, with The Artistry, Cornerstone Roots, and Unity Pacific standing out. A good showing of hip hop, including the fine Fast Crew and DJ Logikal, a handful of ska acts such as dDub plus a few good old pop/rock bands, like Nouveau Riche, Stylus, and Surrealistic. Compiled by house DJ Rob Salmon, disc two is a selection of locally produced tracks played in his set at the festival. It features heavyweights Greg Churchill, Dick Johnson, Baitercell and Timmy Schumacher, and also newcomers like Javed Haider. The production is good and the transitions flawless. Overall this album offers a great range of styles, and does well as a vehicle celebrating community and cultural diversity. Released through Sane Recordings.
