Emcee Lucia: On The Cusp

This is an impressive debut album from Auckland based singer/mc Lucia. With a combination of quality lyrical content, funky beats and instrumentation by NY-based Finsta and producer Rob Lundon, plus a guest appearance from local hip hop heavyweight Scribe, you can't go wrong. The first single All This Time received nationwide airplay, stayed in the Alternative Charts Top 20 for weeks and featured on an NZ On Air Indie Heatseekers disc. Her second single Subscribe 2 Me has more of a mellow jazz feel - there is variety on the album overall. Since moving to Auckland from Wellington in 1995 Lucia has steadily built a solid presence. In '97 she hosted her own hip hop show on Max TV then toured extensively on the Uni Orientation circuit and in 1999 won first prize in bFM's True School Hip Hop freestyle competition. As one of the few female mc's around at the moment, let's hope her continued presence inspires others to further break the mould.
