Dubwise: Reality Chant

By Martyn Pepperell
Caribbean Nyahbingi percussion and crisp Aotearoan reggae, dancehall and dub production is what really characterises 'Reality Chant' for me. Dubwise have succeeded in bringing together people and sounds from the four corners of the earth in a manner that is both uplifting and pleasing to the ear. This is the sophomore release from Christchurch based reggae soundsystem 'Dubwise' and features regular fixtures Messinjah, Confucius, Papa Levi and MC Mana as well as new faces Raggadon (from the Caribbean) and Iya Fari (Africa), two crucial mc's who really bring an authentic culture-based vibe to the music. Horns from Simon Kay and Issac Aesili, percussion from Raggadon, Messinjah, Papa Levi and Partido, drums from Dreadford alongside production from Confucius and Messinjah make for one great instrumental mix. This is real conscious Rastafari Dancehall reggae music with a very militant bent, the culture and message is strong, almost threatening at times, and the vocalists' flows are on point every time. As a journey, 'Reality Chant' is a beautiful listen from start to finish... Out through FMR.
