Various: Raise The Level

By Glen Davison
In an effort to stimulate the production of local music that suits their format, Mai FM’s off-shoot label Mai Music, has released this 11 track compilation of local hip hop and R’n’B tracks. It features most of NZ’s known crews (Deceptikonz, Ill Semantics, P Money, 4 Corners) and also gives some shine to newer acts such as Dubious Brothers, J@mes, Word Perfect and Psyko Akoustix amongst others. Being a Mai associated production, you can expect a few R’n’B moments and these come courtesy of Nesian Mystic and Indigenous Funk Company, while there is a party vibe or a ‘I could play this to my mum’ theme to the hip hop selections. The highlights are provided by the Dubious Brothers’ collaboration with 4 Corners and Te Ata on Third Eyesight, Ill Semantics’ Verbal Assault, the Deceptikonz’ now classic debut track Elimination and a special mention must be made of P Money’s ‘interesting’ use of a typewriter sample on The Whole Truth.
