THE GOLDEN AWESOME: Autumn

By Westley Holdsworth
Shoegaze is the new black right now, and as numerous attempts at being a My Bloody Valentine tribute band pop up all over the country The Golden Awesome are here to show us all how to pull it off with effortless style. Their debut album ‘Autumn’, released through Portland’s M’Lady’s Records, is a collection of fuzz heavy psychedelic ballads. Stef Animal’s harmony layered vocoder-ed vocals carry a sense of beauty as they float over Jo Contag’s predominantly minor based guitar parts. Guitar-wise the album is peppered with some impressive licks and tasteful tones and the rhythm section of Matt Steindl on bass and Justin Barr on drums also keep things interesting, with some great syncopated playing that jumps between differing time signatures. Ruby is a constant build up with a pay off to die for and the melancholic chorus of Highlife make these the standout tracks. They’re a great place to start with your new favourite band who also happen to be one of the best live acts in the country.
