Various: Capitalbase1

By Dominic Blaazer
It’s probably a good time for a compilation with a difference to come out. With recent releases providing solid if not similar vibes, here’s comes a lefty. Like some bastard love child of a Jamaican producer and a Hawaiian PI comes this release from Capitalbase Recordings. A mix of Wellington artists, most tracks are either dub or sunny pop-rock that has few big names but no bad tunes. I prefer the reggae-dub tracks, especially those from Mike Fabulous & The Jamboree Sound, the cheeky but poorly named Super Drums Pro Series, and a well over due track from The Dub Connection. Whilst other dub producers from NZ have gone for the mellow, cold and stoned vibe, this is strictly smiles and sun stuff. Not too forced, very soothing. The poppier tunes are also great, with The Phoenix Foundation contributions showing a laidback confidence. Mixing lush layers of indie surf with and an almost psychedelic groove. Overall a really warm album, from a new label, a great effort from compilers Barnaby Weir and Lee Prebble. Not what you’d expect, and that’s a good thing. Grade B+.
