VON VOIN STRUM: Shiver Roses EP
By Alistar Wickens
Youthful Christchurch five Von Voin Strum may seem to have come out of nowhere with this strong debut EP, but they formed in 2009 and can claim to be former local Battle of the Bands winners. ‘Shiver Roses’ features five songs that are catchy, confident and instantly likeable. Their influences are also often instantly recognisable, as they draw on bands like Soundgarden (most notably on Power & Filth) and at times heavily channel that blues rock swagger of bands like The Checks. Despite nods to others there’s plenty of originality and variety here and the tracks are hard to fault. A strong, driving beat running through all the songs impels the listener to move, and the sound (thanks to engineer/co-producer Andrew Buckton) is huge and polished.
