THESE AUTOMATIC CHANGERS: The Automatic Changers EP

By Olivia Young
These Automatic Changers claim to put ’70s rock and roll back on the local radar, with high hopes of being the next ‘boutique rock band’. In the first recording from this Auckland-based quartet, they attempt to contribute to an era gone by but not forgotten. Producing nostalgic layers of sound they serve up a ‘southern states’ rock style. Occasionally monotonous, the sounds have a tendency to wallow around together with some uncertainty and in turn become blurry as my ears seek what could be clearer in quality. I wonder whether How Many Times is trying to be a retrospective, or perhaps simply replicate the Led Zeppelin sound and their iconic guitar riffs. Solomon Coles’ vocals are reminiscent of Dan Auerbach, yet heavier than The Black Keys produce. Boutique and rock don’t seem to gel as yet, I look forward to hearing this quartet continue to refine and develop their own convincingly original sound and push a few more boundaries.
