Buda: The C Sides
By Jacob Connor
An interesting side excursion for Wellington’s Phoenix Foundation main man, Luke Buda seems aesthetically aligned with UK bedsitters like Babybird and Badly Drawn Boy. The seven track disc is an amalgam of acoustic guitar, prog rock keyboards and electronic frippery. There’s a warm and rich musicality on display and care has been taken with the overlapping textures. It’s all quite mellow and dreamy – really more a collection of atmospheres than a set of songs. Buda orchestrates as a one man band, enlisting the help of collaborators and this is almost his ‘Tubular Bells’. The Doorsy Number Three name checks Courtney Place and Country Boy is a vaulted singalong with a taste of Coldplay. A diverse array, the instrumental tracks slip their moorings entirely and drift off following their own internal muse. The spirit of ‘Kid A’ era Radiohead pops up on Television Songs. An enjoyable introduction to a versatile artist.
