PROJECT CHARLIE: You’re A Long Time Dead

By Alistar Wickens
Project Charlie sound instantly familiar – and safe. Their sound permeates the airwaves of mainstream radio, in the songs of dozens of middle of the road bands aiming for that classic rock sound. The Wellington trio of guitarist and songwriter Charlie Harter, Robyn Frude (bass) and Steve Elden on drums gel readily, the music well-constructed and easy to listen to. I Meant To Say To You and Portside Song are the two stand out tracks for me. Both seem to have a little more passion and emotion than their album mates. Cosmic Rock in contrast is overly cheesy and clichéd, a real let down for the other 15 tracks. Evidently self-recorded, the sound is kept simple and very much in the vein of how a live performance might sound, making this album ideal as a reminder of a gig you thoroughly enjoyed with its light and catchy varied classic soft rock sound. As a standalone CD however I would have preferred to hear more detailed production and some innovation from the group.
