Betchadupa: The Alphabetchadupa

By Shaun Chait
The ‘Neil’s son’s band’ tag must be some weight to carry and anyone who thinks that betchadupa have got by on favours needs to hear this fast. This is a tremendous album, a mature showing that belittles their young years and suggests that Flying Nun have correctly backed one of the most promising pop bands in the country. With nods to The Beatles, Crowded House, and recent Pearl Jam, ‘The Alphabetchadupa’ then sets about establishing its owners’ own brand of pop in many of its more interesting, exciting guises – including thrashy (‘Drop D’), ballad (‘Lucy’s Song’), ambient (‘Other Way’), and accomplished, anthemic showstopper (‘Feed The Dogs’). Surprisingly, it’s from track four that this album really takes off, going against the regular grain. Throughout, ‘The Alphabetchadupa’ is spiced with pretty harmonies, lovely guitar touches, and expert use and understanding of the bridge. A strong debut from a band with all the potential in the world.
