DJCXL: Represent
By Lucy Mullinger
It has been a long time coming and from the strong lyrics and early punchy beats it’s clear DJCXL didn’t plan on providing a typical hip hop album as a showcase of his skills. “I called the album ‘Represent’ because it is my life journey. I wanted to create music that moved people.” Indeed, in places this album seeks to move mountains, with its no-holds-barred attitude towards the NZ lifestyle, while in others simply celebrates that journey. CXL touches on all emotions, with a beautiful love song My Love at track three following the no-holds-barred rail against our shocking child abuse statistics of Make A Change. All 14 tracks were recorded by NOX at the label’s Illegal Musik Studio, with Anonymouz assisting DJCXL in production. Guesting on vocals are a regular who’s who of Kiwi hip hop talent, present and future; K.One, Ermehn, Scribe, J. Williams, Hazaduz and Erakah among them. Underpinned by the master’s expert, and not over-used (at least until the album’s end) scratching, the album maintains interest with its variety of music, voice and message.
