MR WINTER: Urban Shepard
By Ben Martin
Recording this album in his Wellington home studio was a seven year process for the multi-talented Chris Winter, and there is nothing in the resulting intricate web of sound to suggest it wasn’t worth every hour spent. This record is a kaleidoscope of syncopated beats and tantalising tangents, false ends and ingenious experimentation, all tied together with Winter’s delightfully jazzy trumpet lines. The artist has a considerable musical career behind him, regularly plays trumpet for The Black Seeds and has worked as a sound engineer at both Abbey Road and Universal Studios. He has used his considerable expertise to produce a collection that stands out from the crowd in both its boldness and its execution. While the majority of the instrumentation is Winter himself there are guest spots for Nigel Paterson (The Black Seeds), Steve Bremner (The Adults, NZSO) and Thomas McGinty (The Lamps). Wonderfully creative and consistently entertaining, this electro-jazz album is reward for those who demand that little bit more of their aural pleasures.
