THE SINGH BROTHERS: Take Us Away EP
By Tim Gruar
All the tracks, bar one, on this remarkable 7-track EP are written, played and produced by Shaan and Tyaan Singh. What’s more remarkable is that they’re only 18 and 15 years old respectively. ‘Take Us Away’ is a home studio production to fundraise for an upcoming trip with Youth Jazz Big Band, but showcases some incredible young talent and songwriting. The jazzy, breezy Stay Cool has a classy maturity, while Lightning is a wonderfully soulful number that veterans like UK’s Elbow or even Coldplay might want in their repertoire. Always Singing features a classy rocka-bye beat and brassy alto sax-fueled chorus, but the highlight is One Day, a jam-fest that arcs between pumping ska to full on wig out. Whilst the production is a little flat and restrained, think of this as a good live demo and not only an investment in the Singh’s future musical endeavours but an investment in our country’s talent. Plus you can say you heard them before they were famous. If they keep up these standards, they likely soon will be.
