SCORIA: Hammerhead

Scoria is essentially the solo project of Aaron Hunt from Wallaceville, Upper Hutt, who plays guitar, bass, keyboards, writes all the words and music and does vocals. He is assisted by Nick Carroll on drums who also engineered the whole thing and did the artwork. Apparently Hunt has been involved in music for over two decades, as a singer/songwriter, guitarist, music teacher and frontman for covers band Sin City. It’s a bit of a mash up of hard rock/heavy metal flavours – the most complimentary would be good rubs of Iron Maiden, hints of Metallica and general rock-out anthems with some appropriate sound effects such as revving V8s and motorbikes etc. There are some fun cuts here, an update on old school flavours, a little bit glam and sleazy. Unfortunately the vocals often fail and the production is thin, sounding like everything except the drums was DI-ed. A shame because there are some good different ideas going on song-wise, and an often filthy (in a good way) guitar sound – it just doesn’t sound like an amp. This essentially demo release might do better a few ways – a full band set up or a remix of the raw tracks with a new producer... and the use of a recording studio.
