SPARTACUS R: The View
By Jason Huss
Spartacus R is a 6-piece psychedelic rock outfit out of Wellington. With three of the musicians in other successful bands around town they have a head start, ready to take us on a journey through space and time with this brilliant sophomore album, boasting a kaleidoscope of pounding rhythms, waves of keyboards and mesmerising sonic textures. This time round the band has really taken a giant leap forward. The album takes the listener through multiple decades of music, right from early Doors-y kind of psychedelica, especially when the organs shine, all the way to the familiar sound of their label LOOP. The songs themselves never remain the same, usually changing into completely different entities, best example is the nine minute opus You and Me in 3D! starting with a single guitar and ending in a somewhat retro explosion. A personal favorite off the album is Stream Runs Dry, reminiscent of the pulp fiction sound, exposing their ability to create beautiful vocal melodies. Wonderfully produced and recorded, Spartacus R have outdone themselves.
