DECORTICA: Love Hotel EP
By Kate Foster
‘Love Hotel’ is a studied and melodic affair, heady with slick odes of fantasy and the unseen world of personal universes. Familiarity with the track Eros could be possible for the horror flick fans out there as it features on the soundtrack to recent cinema release, The Devil’s Rock. A slide over to YouTube for a search yields a beautiful, moody little video directed and edited by Johnny Barker, showing a mix of scenes from the film and atmospheric performance shots of this dark and talented trio; Matthew Bosher, Antoinette Lee and Tory ‘Jester’ Staples. Accomplished and confident vocalisations secure the overall lusciousness of these pieces and it’s refreshing to hear someone who can actually carve, with the chops required to create cohesion through the entire mood of this release. This extremely polished EP offers plenty to be excited about for fans of Deftones, Isis or just generally solid and sincere metal-edged rock. Decortica are just so easy to slip away into as you listen, with whirling aural-scapes and great slabs of technical proficiency which meld into a considered and precise effort in escapism – which is in keeping with the concept EP’s contextual themes.
