GOD BOWS TO MATH: God Bows To Math

The first full-length album from a band described by their record company (Muzai) as ‘Auckland’s best noise merchants’. Initially recorded, then lost to an evil hard drive failure, the album was subsequently re-recorded by God Bows To Math in sparkly Wanganui. The opus was then mastered by the Chicago Mastering Service, who gave the trio what they call the “suitably rough” quality they were after. There’s definitely noise in abundance, but also a fair amount of tightly played groove and rock. Vocal phrases are chanted /ranted (in America that would rhyme…) over the top of driving drum patterns, fuzzy bass and searing guitar. With song titles like How To Beat Your Dad At Chess and The Ship That Sank A Thousand Faces, it doesn’t even matter that I’m not sure what the songs are about – I’m still enjoying them. A shiny disc of rage and discordance, to be kept upon your person until such time as you need to rail against the world. In case of existential angst, break glass.
