Billy Squire: Reconcile
By Mike Moroney
I don't like to make genre comparisons for NZ music but given that Billy Squire has been 30 years in the USA, there's no denying his influences. In fact, someone in the next room thought I'd acquired an obscure Little Feat album. Squire's band and his arrangements have a big, generous looseness, from the open-style drumming to the honky-tonk piano, which is reminiscent of the early Grateful Dead - but what's this? ...the whole rhythm section is Squire himself! I could've sworn that was a live recording; this is seriously good multi-tracking! Some of the instrumental tracks are just fillers, like a long introduction to a song that never comes but the songs are all strong and suit his vocal style.
