PHOTONIC : Rif Mountains

By Jason Huss
Photonic is a one-man-band (Craig Scott), armed with a crazy amount of distorted guitar riffs, electronic beats and spaced out vocals. This entire album is based upon a bed of just one beat – each track has it. Despite this restriction there is plenty of variation. Having only the one beat certainly doesn’t mean a lack of thought went into this intriguing album which doesn’t seem to follow any trends or go in any direction that you’d expect it to. There are lots of subtle sounds added to the beat, including reversed snares at a good head bobbing speed (which, according to the artist are supposed to put you in a trance). And however strange the beat gets, it never fails to fit with the riffs. This is important because, as the name of the album would suggest, there are lots of good riffs. Gold Rush has one of the most killer, heavy, fuzzy riffs at its start, then, just as you’re starting to get into it, throws you another and then another. I highly recommend this to any metal-head wanting something different, and anyone else who wants to try an album that is like nothing you’ve ever heard before.
