THE NUDGE: Big Nudge Pie

By Casper Jensen
Warning – this band is unusual and unconventional. Essentially a combination of gritty blues-rock jams, spliced with elements of ’60s psychedelia in the style of Pink Floyd, and hippie era krautrock band Can. There’s no shortage of eccentricities on this disc, which features some fairly singular song structures and lots of raunchy blues guitar solos. Recorded largely without overdubs at the Surgery in Wellington, the album gives the impression of a live band letting loose in the studio. Golden Egg is Ryan Prebble’s best blues guitar showing on the album. The spooky keyboard intro on Leif conjures up the foreboding, eccentric sound of ’60s experimental rock nicely. These guys are also completely fixated on pies, as you may have noticed. The actual contents of the album however, don’t deal with pie fillings or pies in any way. Perhaps it’s a suggestion that the elements of the band fit together like wedges of a pie… who knows? Anyway, it adds to the mystique I guess.
