SNAKEDOG : Road
By Simon Sweetman
Snakedog is a new project featuring Dave Mulcahy (guitars, vocals, keys) and Steve Gilbero on drums. Except, actually, it’s an old project. It was originally demo-ed around 2006 and then again in 2008. There’s been some assistance from Nick Roughan and finally, this year, these songs have been dusted off, scrubbed up and made ready to enter the world. There’s a touch of political commentary to some of the lyrics, but Mulcahy’s guitar picks the pocket that Gilbero has created; the two creating a groove-based set of rock songs that recall some of Joe Walsh’s 1970’s work and some of the mid/late 1990’s Kiwi guitar-scribble music. So, if lyrics aren’t your thing it’s no matter. You can either enjoy and agree with the subtle sloganeering or just get lost in the space of these strong rock songs. I’ve loved taking this journey. I like that, at nine songs, it’s the almost perfect length for an alt-pop/rock record. No filler, all good.
