Kitsch: Love Songs for Romantic Punks
By Jacob Connor
Kitsch bristle at Blink 182 comparisons but there is a sunny Californian bounce to this album, closer to melodic West Coast neo-punks Green Day than to Sticky Filth. As a package of raucous energy, 'Love Songs' contains all the requisite elements; chunky guitar, well pummelled drums, and a great 'live' sounding recording of tight and resilient performances from a battle hardened outfit. This will admirably suit FM radio or a teen movie soundtrack. The 16 songs clock in at 31 minutes. The lyrics, written in the first person, are both transparent and ambiguous because straightforward lines contain unexplained references. With the exception of Warsux they mainly address personal relationships and the will to prevail. The voice is sometimes buried under a guitar avalanche but what matters most is forward propulsion. Add a beer and you have an ideal North Shore party record.
