Deborah Wai Kapohe: I Unwrap You
By Peter Dent
This album was funded from money won by Ms Wai Kapohe at the Rotorua Singing Competitions! It's a lovely NZ folk album, featuring the 10-string guitar and percussion of Sam Benge and the acoustic guitar and gorgeous vocals of Kapohe. Not only is she a wonderful singer, but quite an accomplished songwriter to boot. She penned all 11 songs here. You may wonder just how funky two acoustics can get and the answer is VERY! On the interestingly-titled Death the guitars and percussion create a cornucopia of groovy spanish-tinged rhythms. On the other hand, some of Deborah's vocal inflections are reminiscent of Gaelic vocalists, like Ireland's Marie Ni Bhraonain from Clannad. Recorded at Wellington Teachers College in 1999, 'I Unwrap You' is a testament to David Downes' engineering skills – each track a sonic masterpiece! Well worth looking for.
