DJ DEFINITE: From Hell To Breakfast EP

By Ben Martin
Brent Strathdee is a busy chap, fronting Dunedin alt funk band Hangman as well as finding time to produce this EP under his hip hop alias of DJ Definite. His taste for funk definitely comes through – fifth and final tune The Deferential is packed with attitude – but this is not just hip hop funk fusion. Instead, Strathdee applies his considerable talent and experience (he was also the DJ for Capital Records‘ duo Definite and Bling) to weave a path through darker, more pensive modes of the form, touching lightly on jazz grooves before bringing us back to his happy place. Four of the five tracks are collaborations with different vocalists and this short EP manages to be haunting then uplifting, melodic then raw, without ever feeling too disjointed. Lyrically smart, always interesting and extremely well produced.
