Kathy's Company: Life After Life

By Peter Dent
Here's a rarity these days: an album of contemporary folk pop that is almost entirely performed with just voice and acoustic guitar! In fact, the only exceptions are Sweet and Sweet 2 which are highly treated voice and Gone which features drum machine and synthesisers. Kathy's voice is reminiscent of other artists of the genre like Joni Mitchell. Her songs are deep, touching and obviously very personal. Production is strong and clean, courtesy of Phil Yule at the Voice Box and Kathy. Lyrics demand to be listened to closely: there's no background music here! The acoustic guitar is beautifully recorded and adequately frames Kathy's lovely voice. I couldn't imagine these songs with full band backing - they are already elegantly presented, and aurally satisfying. Contact Kathy's Company, PO Box 37729, Parnell, Auckland.
