Subject2Change: Soundtracks And Inventions
By Michael Flynn
Subject2Change is fusion in the truest sense on the word. This impressive ensemble of six talented musicians (hailing from the UK and Australasia) results in a diverse and energetic collective and a two-disc release. ‘Soundtracks’ is an album of exciting boundary pushing compositions, while ‘Inventions’ is a live studio recording of improvised music, featuring Portuguese percussionist Pedro Carneiro. Subject2Change is made up of Dan Bendrups (trombone), Rob Burns (bass), Trevor Coleman (keyboards), Nick Cornish (saxophones), David Harrison (guitars) and Paul McLennan-Kissel on drums. Having all worked in different areas of the music industry, each brings with them a different set of influences and experiences. Subject2Change has the philosophy of “playing music at the edge”. Standouts for me; Harrison’s scorching guitar work on 14/5 and the funky Get Back In The Bubble. But to single out just one performance would be an injustice to all the other excellent contributions made on this impressive album. If fusion is your bag, then I highly recommend you investigate this lively recording out of Albany St Studios in Dunedin.
