Nairobi Trio: Absolutely Live In Norway
By Steve Cournane
If you are a big fan of Nairobi trio then this will be a must, but if you want an introduction to the band I might recommend some of their studio albums first. The sound quality here is fine though not exceptional for a non-percussion live recording. Nairobi seem to have two sides: one more interested in entertainment (harking back to their hot club roots) delivering such tunes as the vocal version of It Don't Mean a Thing and Black Orpheus and the other exploring original tunes such as Nigel Gavin's Shelf Life. The sound of the new band with the addition of Andrew Dixon on saxophone is quite different... more sweet and maybe more vocally dominant? Strangely at times this album reminds me of the quite superb Chaps from Dunedin...
