Dead Pan Rangers: Dead Pan Rangers

By Jacob Connor
The disc content is admirably represented by the sleeve which features an aesthetically pleasing amorphous blob that could be anything. The music within features cosy mildewed slacker songs sung in an intimate deadpan whispery register and pure soundscape sections. Oldman features an old man ranting while a broken toilet cascades in the background. Tightly-packed guitar melodies and mellow acoustic tunes are bolstered with keyboard harmony lines. It's really a twilight world of shadow and ectoplasm, Velvet Underground and a touch of 'The Magic Roundabout'. Flake starts with a yawn and could be a Hamiltonian Pavement, with a voice proclaiming to be "the centre of attention now". In fact, the songs and players come across as completely unassuming. The ambivalent nature of the disc means it will happily play in the background and reveal its charms over repeated listens. "We're not defunct... just quiet" they explain in the cover letter.
