Dave Edwards: The Marion Flow
By St. Lucy
A collection of tunes, recorded between 1999 and 2001, presented by Wellington poet/songwriter/composer Dave Edwards. Homemade cover art, proving that it takes not a major label to present a classy package, encapsulating a disk of 16 tracks. Nice! The liner notes reckon that Chris Knox "said he likes it" and I have no problem believing that. It's lo-fi, organic and about as eclectic as one could manage. Kind of reminds me of Nick Cave if he had grown up in Timaru. No pretentious American accents or catch phrase choruses, just a bunch of people making music. Don't be thrown by the somewhat atonal nature of the first track, patience is rewarded with jems like She Doesn't Love You (the most articulate Beatles pisstake I have ever heard) and an exquisite live version of the title track. A little beauty!
