The False Dmitrys: Deviations
By Jacob Connor
Liner notes for this 4-track recording helpfully include a warning for audiophiles that the sound quality is ratty. No mention is made of the creeping malignance that permeates the selections, which are discoloured by an underlying theme of dysfunction. The False Dmitrys are society's outsiders 'in a bedsitting room on the wrong side of the wrong town'. The wilfully obscure/experimental material is anti-social and periodically interesting, mostly for lyrical juxtaposition. Bile-inflected commentary is similar in tone to Chris Mathews' frothing in Gaskrankinstation. Various techniques are used to make the listening experience unsettling, a voice buzzing between speakers on Blowfly, undisciplined guitar scrapings, a moronic 'lalalala' background chant on Camera Shy. I would recommended this for audio masochists, but to quote the song Cup : "No pain, no gain, but I'd rather do without the pain and I don't think I can go through it all again."
