Nesian Mystik: Polysaturated
By Emma Philpott
These guys were possibly the most outstanding cross-over group of 2002. After first single Nesian Style and second It's On both hit gold sales in NZ last year, it comes as no surprise that this record also hit gold status shortly after release. While it has an unmistakably R'n'B flavour courtesy of vocalist Te Awanui Pine Reeder, this album is deliciously funky, with humour, smarts and appeal for a much wider audience. Songs like Roots Discussion and Unity (The Movement) discuss NZ's place in the hip hop movement, with enough nods to international mcs to keep old school hip hop fans happy. While the skits, Introduction and Interlude, get weary on repeat listen, the remaining 13 tracks shine with a new flavour of culture-proud New Zealand hip hop. Out on Bounce Records, Polysaturated is an outstanding debut.
