MACHETE JUSTICE: Reversion

By Alistar Wickens
It would have been easy for this Tauranga four-piece to fall into the same trap as so many others who take inspiration from the hard rock and metal of the ’90s – in seeking to emulate those bands rather than taking that sound and building their own style from it. Machete Justice show that they’ve learned what they can from their idols and made the music their own. The nine songs on this debut are solid blasts of New Zealand metal, but with a funk edge to them. The vocals are impressive, low guttural growls contrasted with a much more melodic style to good effect, along with some piercing screams. The band’s two vocalists Tarquin Keys and Mark Wright are evidently pretty versatile. ‘Reversion’ is a strong first step on that aspirational path towards world domination.
