Bic Runga: Beautiful Collision
By Emma Phillpott
The bridge between this album and 1996's 'Drive' is the opener When I See You Smile, intimately signing off the style of Runga's first album. From then on in, 'Beautiful Collision' is a completely different beast with Runga twisting some standard song forms and then sometimes dropping in some wry humour (especially in the lyrics to Get Some Sleep). The shining stars include the whimsical Precious Things, the jazz-tinged Honest Goodbyes, and operatic title track Beautiful Collision - all indicative of her maturing production skills and comfort in the producers seat. Lyric-wise she doesn't open her diary this time around, but in songs like Election Night we get the impression that she is mostly very happy. Though she enlisted the help of some stellar international players (Sebastian Steinburg, Joey Waronker) and locals (including Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn and Milan Borich for starters) they're just there to fill in Runga's very individual musical vision. This is a beautiful diversion from Bic Runga, well worth the years we've waited for it.
