Various (21 Years Of Flying Nun Records): Under The Influence

By Shaun Chait
To those in the know, Flying Nun is a Kiwi icon. Where would we be without 'em? That's a question for both fans and musicians to ponder, and some of the musos provide their answers on this double disc treat celebrating the Nun's 21st, which features Nun bands covering Nun classics, some providing new tunes as well. Who among us hasn't been inspired by a piece of brilliance from the Nun stable over the years? Who hasn't gone into Outta Space (well done Betchadupa), rediscovered Snapper (cheers The Clean) or Superette (recalled by Pan Am), thought The Chills had indeed come up with a Heavenly Pop Hit (done surf-like by Garageland), or come down to Death And The Maiden (Mr Malkmus no less). Graeme Downes rounds the covers out with a Nun medley. There's also new stuff from old faves HDU and The Clean, as well as new dirty rock Nunisms courtesy of Hasselhoff Experiment and The D4. What more could you ask for? Perhaps some women, but then this Nun has always preferred men. This is one for all of us, from owners of the whole back catalogue down to new Nun devotees.
