Derek Lind: 12 Good Hours of Daylight

By Tim Page
Another offering from one of New Zealand's most understated talents. Reprising 1994's, 'Stations', Lind again collaborates with producer/engineer Steve Garden, recording at the Garden Shed studio. Songs were recorded 'live', with voice and acoustic guitar. Tasteful embellishments were added from ex-Warratah Clinton Brown on acoustic bass, Alan Brown of Blue Train fame on Hammond and Wurlitzer, Lind's son Dylan and Steve Garden taking care of percussion. The result is an uncluttered sound, highlighting Lind's distinctive, percussive guitar style, and rich evocative lyrics. Clearly of deep personal faith, there is not an ounce of 'preachy' in this collection. Rather Lind favours intimate, almost introspective reflection. Themes range from This Old Town lamenting the big city erosion of community, to the feel-good Northland Run, celebration of small-town New Zealand. Picasso Visits Matisse demonstrates Lind's ability as a deep-thinking wordsmith/storykteller, as well as other talents in fine art. A definite master of his craft, Lind has carved out his own distinctive style that transcends fleeting musical fads. As with his previous albums, I know I'll still be listening to this many years from now. Distributed by Someone Up There Records www.someone.co.nz
