THE INSATIABLE MOON: Various Artists (Soundtrack)

By Michael Flynn
The Insatiable Moon is the newly released film of NZ writer Mike Riddell’s novel of the same name. It deals with the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health problems within our society – no surprise therefore to find the soundtrack features music by a number of artists who have worked as mental health promoters for the Mental Health Foundation – such as Johnny Matteson, samRB and the late and truly great Mahinarangi Tocker. As a soundtrack the choice of songs used in this film sit very well. However, as a collection of songs worthy of repeated plays, the film dialogue sections in between, as sensitive as they are, get in the way, reminding the listener this is a soundtrack after all and not just a compilation. Luke Hurley, performing in his long time capacity as a busker in the film, opens splendidly with The Sound. Miller Christensen-Yule and Gala Harwood’s contribution A Full Moon Melody, is most impressive, as is Miller’s later song See You ’Round. The two superb songs by very talented samRB were a nice inclusion while closing on Tocker’s wonderfully moving Forever serves to remind me of just what an extraordinary artist she really was.
