THE MURDER CHORD: Swarm One EP
By Ania Glowacz
The Murder Chord are a spontaneous-sounding two-piece of Dave Hine (ex-Missing Teeth drummer) and Ryan Sykes. This is their first release – with more threatened. The style is quirky, spoken/sung storytelling (reminds one of bands like Pulp or Blur with their slice-of-life tales), short and to-the-point, highlights being the ‘live’ style and the use of the piano/keyboard as a percussive instrument. It sounds great, as hard, fast and heavy as a piano can sound. Subject matter includes living in total radiation, older men with young pretty women, a BZP comedown song and another about a baby in a jar. Variety, humour and good energy – it’s all here, along with a song all in one chord… This band has something to say and share, and there’s intelligence, entertainment, with the added bonus of live footage, and fortunately they’re not taking it all too seriously. Dresden Dolls with more wit and less histrionics and drama. These guys would be great at a party.
