DEAR TIME’S WASTE: Spells

By Amy Maclaine
Claire Duncan, recording under the name of Dear Time’s Waste, has created a captivating release in this debut album. The pace shifts constantly throughout, from the lilting vocals and relaxed melodies of Brains to the pop-driven hook of These Words Stick Me to You. Mixing and mastering by Dale Cotton results in the album’s 10 floaty tunes each conjuring a different musical landscape. Expertly crafted, these songs are charming, wistful and haunting all at once. Jangly guitars and off-kilter beats only add to the magic, accompanying beautifully endless layers of vocals. Noteworthy is Dear Time’s Waste’s ability to combine modern indie pop with post-punk, the end result being a cross between Patti Smith and Camera Obscura. Each listen of this album shows more depth and feeling to every track. With a reflective and philosophical lyrical sensibility, ‘Spells’ is an amazing set of dreamy songs, well at home within the coming summer months.
