CORNERSTONE ROOTS: Future Is Now

By Tim Gruar
Since their last outing, 2007’s ‘Free Yourself’, Cornerstone Roots have been through many life changes, trials and tribulations. Although it took only four days at Revolver Studios to lay down, their third album has been a three year journey, so it’s no surprise that it seeks to explore life’s greater issues with some personal insight, to take on the big picture from a small community perspective. There’s a fresher mix of trad reggae and contemporary influences this time. The title track and Seeds both focus on the interplay between personal and global issues, like financial and personal loss and personal responses to such. Ultimately, the importance of family and of inter-generational exchange with the realisation of cultural identity are paramount themes throughout. A more literal family tie with the acoustic debut of 10-year-old Reiki Ruawai, son of bassist Naomi Tuao and vocalist Brian Ruawai, adds some down home diversity. This is a band that has always mixed thumping dub with conscious roots. Expect to hear this at barbies and on summer festival stages – despite the heavy messages you will want to dance and skank. Respect.
